Frying Onions 01/03/08

Frying Onions was performed in front of a small audience who had to sit and endure an hour and a half of chopping and frying onions. The motion became incredibly repetitive and the smell became so intense it was painful to the senses. Food became an important part of my work because of this idea that in certain contexts it can be revolting. As a performer however I was experimenting with costume and location, I made this piece in a domestic kitchen as oppose to a studio or white performance space or gallery. I played with the atmosphere of the location, the kitchen was very dimly lit, this was an element that really added to the audiences experience as it would have become very difficult to watch the actual performance through the onion smell and the little light.
